Way to roll back that spending, idiot.

I'd be all for high-speed rail -- if it were privately financed. Because then we'd know for sure that there was an economic upside to it. Y'know, as in "profitable if managed properly."
If AmTrak gets hold of it, and my understanding is that it will, Barry's simply suggesting that we the taxpayers flush $53 billion (and I'm guessing it would be much, much higher) down a hole so he and his coreligionists can buy their next elections.
Jugears is either as stupid as a boxcar full of sledgehammers -- and with respect to business and the economy that's so obvious as to be axiomatic -- or he's fucking brilliant but with an agenda so antithetical to core American values as to be traitorous.
No bet either way.

I was figuring that it is yet another political grandstanding maneuver, purely as a stunt to get an early start at his favorite hobby, campaigning for re-election.
Yup. Buying of votes by promising to steal from Peter to give Paul what he wants, and as you noted, we've seen this before, and we have an excellent example in the failures of what is AmTrak.
It makes no difference, really, as all he has to do is promote it and watch it fail to get any traction in Congress. He can then blame the Eeeeevil Rethuglicans, who are too tight-fisted with money, and don't know the right things to fund, or some other non-sense.
Piss on them all.
High-speed rail is a huge payoff to Unions and special interests, and it's a hideous monstrosity that will destroy small towns and suburban communities through which it runs.
"When you steal from Peter to pay Paul, Paul will rarely object."
Originally Heinlein's, I believe.
A few (among many) of my other thoughts were, "Why $53 billion? Someone in the 'Adminstration' pull that number out of their ass?" Trial balloon? See if they could get the moderate wing of the Stupid Party (who after all runs the House, wherein lies the power of the purse) to geek? Trying to force yet another demagoguable budget pissing match?
The high-speed rail concept has a lot of barriers in this country, not the least of which -- as you well know, living in Oz as I do -- that in order to cut costs whoever was going to design it would want to use existing lines to whatever extent possible. Unfortunately we're both aware of the sorry state of most of the grade crossings throughout the country, and that they're constantly getting beaten up by OTR tractor-trailers and ag traffic.
Essentially, those of us who live in flyover country would wind up disproportionally footing the bill for the Northeast Corridor, Old Northwest (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, western Pennsylvania) and
West Coast routes. Works out well for them and screws the people who didn't vote for Jugears and his fellow travelers anyway.
AND, since it'd be a Federal project, Davis-Bacon would by law be invoked, thereby further empowering (and entrenching the base) Teh Won's favored constituency, Whose Name Shall Not Be Uttered. Oh fuck it, I will -- Big Labor.
Rent-seeking and vote-buying piece of shit . . .

That was a terrific rant, sir!
(Applause from the host)
Using the West-Coast existing-corridor route in this particular area would be incredibly damaging to the housing market of Teh Won's own uber-wealthy Democrat base. Hope the Google map link works. The demand to run an an aerial viaduct along this stretch of road where the 70-foot tall monstrosity would go, are all over $1.5 million. They would be reduced to nothing, or forced to be taken ala Kelo - and the houses a block away go up in price, and ones in the next block are higher. Wanna see where Steve Jobs lives? It's two blocks away.
[the houses] are all over $1.5 million..
Dirt,
The irony of it all is just delicious!
