It isn't the how or the why of doing the wiping, and it isn't the "Ewwww!" factor.
It's entirely about the sanitary factor involved.
Sanitary wiping via TP has been an almost immesurable factor in reducing person-to-person pathogen proliferation, leading to longer, healthier lives.
End of story.
BTW, there's a certain text of a certain religion that proscribes the use of the right hand for doing the wiping. That hand is for eating, the left is for wiping. It's for a reason, and it's plain as day as to why.
